The first generation Nissan 240SX was produced from 1989-1994 and can be divided into two models, the Zenki and the Chuki.  Each variant came in two body styles, the hatchback and coupe.  Both styles had the same front body work as the Nissan 180SX (hatchback) and had the same sloping front with pop-up headlights.  Most components and features were identical, with just a few variations, and shared the same chassis.

The 240SX Zenki model was sold from 1989-1990 and was powered by a 140 HP 2.4-liter SOHC KA24E engine with 3 valves per cylinder.  The model was a non-turbo engine in the US, had four wheel disc brakes (standard) with an optional anti-lock braking system for the SE.  Both models were available in either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.  The coupe 240SX model offered a head-up display, which showed a digital speedometer, as part of the optional power convenience group.

The 240SX Chuki model was sold from 1991-1994 and was powered by a 155 HP DOHC KA24DE engine with 4 valves per cylinder (15 more HP then the Zenki model).  This new 240SX model had an overhaul that included mostly just minor body changes in addition to the new engine.  The front bumper of the Zenki was replaced by a smoother modern-looking (for the time) bumper, and a new trim package was added to the hatchback (LE) that included leather interior.  There was an optional sports package that included a limited slip differential and the HICAS four wheel steering was added to the hatchback.

In 1992 a convertible body style was added to the 240SX market, but it was exclusive to the North America market, and was partially assembled in Japan and finished in California.  For 1994, the only available 240SX was a Special Edition of the Convertible, which had a 4-speed automatic transmission.
