If you're looking to increase the performance of your Toyota MR2 3SGTE, you've probably looked at many different options.  One way for your to increase the performance of your MR2 3SGTE is to install an intercooler kit.  An intercooler kit will help increase the performance and can even help protect against heat damage.

As a turbo spins up it produces heat from the friction, which ends up heating up the incoming air to the MR2 3SGTE engine.  As air heats up it expands, so it's best to keep the air as cool as possible allowing more air to enter the MR2 3SGTE cylinders at a time.  An intercooler will help with just that, the intake air is routed through the intercooler, after being compressed by the turbo, cooling it so that more air can enter the MR2 3SGTE cylinders.  With more air entering the cylinders at one time, it allows your MR2 3SGTE engine to burn the fuel/air mix more efficiently, creating greater performance then before.  Your intercooler kit will do more then just cool the MR2 3SGTE intake air though, it also routes the exhaust gases (what powers the turbo) through the intercooler first.  With the intercooler cooling the exhaust gases before they reach the turbo, it helps keep the turbo even cooler since the heat of the MR2 3SGTE exhaust isn't adding to it.

As you're looking at intercooler kits, you will need to decide what type of cooling you want.  An intercooler can come in a couple different cooling systems, you can buy either air-air cooling or air-liquid cooling for your MR2 3SGTE.  Both systems are great, but have some differences between them.  If you're looking to increase performance but don't want to add a lot of weight to your MR2 3SGTE, then an air-air intercooler is probably what you want.  While an air-liquid intercooler will weigh more (usually) then an air-air, it will also increase performance more and requires less piping for the gases to move through.  With less piping for gases to have to move through, it provides a faster response time for your turbo (lower turbo lag).  Some air-liquid intercoolers even have the option of storing ice in your MR2 3SGTE, although this requires you to replace the ice constantly, it allows the intercooler to cool the intake and exhaust gases even more then it would have before.
