With a turbo installed on your Volkswagen Golf, it's possible that you've been looking for more ways to increase the performance or even to help reduce the chances of your engine overheating.  By installing an Intercooler kit to your Golf, you'll be able to not only increase performance but also reduce the chances of the turbo and engine overheating.

By installing an Intercooler kit, it will work to keep the intake and exhaust gases a cooler temperature.  By lowering the exhaust gases temperature before they reach the Golf turbo, the intercooler will help to keep the turbo on your Golf cooler.  While the intercooler is keeping the Golf turbo cooler it also helps to keep the intake air cooler from the compression process and just contact with the turbo itself (turbo produces heat as it spins up due to friction).  In addition to keeping the Golf intake air cooler during the compression it will also be routed through the intercooler after it passes the turbo, this lowers the temperature even further and allows more air to enter the cylinder head at one time.  With more air entering the Golf cylinders from the intercooler, a cleaner more efficient burn of the fuel/air mix can occur, producing greater performance.

Once you decide what intercooler kit to buy for your Golf, you will need to figure out what type of cooling you want.  An intercooler comes with one of two types of cooling; either air-air cooling or air-liquid cooling.  Both systems are great for increasing performance and protecting against heat damage, however, each has slight differences.  With an air-air intercooler, it won't be able to cool the intake and exhaust gases as much as an air-liquid but it weighs less, so if you don't want to add too much weight to your Golf, this would be a great choice.  The air-liquid intercoolers do weigh more, usually, but are generally able to keep the intake and exhaust temperatures cooler.  The air-liquid intercoolers usually use just plain water to cool the gases (no extra coolants needed), also it doesn't require as much piping for the gases.  With less distance for the gases to travel, the intercooler can help lower turbo lag on your Golf engine.  Some are even able to store ice, but would require to be replaced constantly.
