If you've been looking to get more performance out of your Audi A4 turbo engine, you've probably been looking for an intercooler kit. With an Intercooler installed on your A4 turbo engine, it will increase performance and help protect your engine from heat damage.
An intercooler will help keep the heat produced from your turbo within limits. With a turbo installed on your A4 the exhaust gases are routed from the engine to the turbo to provide the extra performance, however, when this is done not only are the exhaust gases turning the turbo it also transfers more heat. With an intercooler installed on your A4, it will cool the exhaust gases (helping keep the A4 turbo cooler) as well as keep the compressed air going in the intake cooler. As air heats up it expands, the intercooler helps cool the incoming air so that more air can enter the cylinder head of the A4 at a time, allowing for a greater burn of the fuel and therefore more HP.
An intercooler can cool the engine of your Audi A4 in two different ways, you can use either air-air cooling or air-liquid cooling. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. With an air-liquid intercooler, the engine is cooled by usually plain water. Although the air-liquid generally weighs more then an air-air intercooler due to the extra components needed on your A4, it doesn't require as much piping for the exhaust/intake gases. What this means is, you will see an increase in not only performance but it will also lower turbo lag. Some air-liquid intercoolers are even able to have ice stored in them, allowing the intercooler to keep the exhaust/intake gases even cooler, although this requires the ice to be replaced often.
- An intercooler on your A4 increases performance by cooling the intake/exhaust gases
- Protects your engine from heat damage
- Air-liquid Intercooler weighs more, but provides a faster reaction for your A4 turbo engine
